Samu Omorodion believes ‘God’ was the reason why he did not end up moving to Chelsea in the most recent summer transfer window.

It was reported in June that Chelsea had made 20-year-old forward Omorodion their top attacking target.

Spanish club Atletico Madrid then rejected a £42m bid from Chelsea for the youngster in July.

In August, it emerged that Omorodion was not keen on the switch to Stamford Bridge anyway, due to a disagreement over image rights.

Omorodion ended up joining Porto – and he’s enjoyed a glowing start in Portugal – registering seven goals across his first seven games for the club.

He’s now convinced that a higher power was involved in his failed move to Chelsea as he told Spanish outlet RTVE: ‘I had a very difficult summer.

‘We had a really bad time because in the end everyone knows that I was close to signing, but it’s true that if it didn’t happen, it was for a reason, because God didn’t want it.

‘I’m also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when things looked at their worst, and I’m very happy with where I am now.

‘I’ve left the past behind and now I’m focused on what’s coming to me.’

Omorodion scored twice in the 3-3 Europa League draw with Manchester United earlier this month.

He has played for Spain at both U21 and U23 level, helping the latter age group secure a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer.

Omorodion started his career at Granada before he was snapped up by Atletico Madrid in 2023.

After an impressive season-long loan at Alaves last term, he attracted transfer interest from Chelsea, but joined Porto instead.
