Ncuti Gatwa has confirmed he will be returning for a third season of Doctor Who.

Last year the Sex Education star, 31, took over the starring role as the Time Lord in the long-running BBC series.

He made his first appearance on the final of the three specials, which saw David Tennant briefly return to the role, before his first full season at the helm aired earlier this year.

Although fans already knew there was another season on the way, Ncuti’s future on the show after that hadn’t yet been revealed.

However, the actor has now shared he is set to star in a third season of the show.

‘It is all going well. We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up…at Christmas,’ he said during an appearance on the latest episode of The Graham Norton Show.

Although his comments didn’t make the final cut, he did also add they were ‘filming a third season next year’.

Speaking about also taking over as the beloved character, Ncuti said it had been ‘amazing’ so far, calling Whovians the ‘sweetest and best fans’.

Before he shared the news, Doctor Who fans were aware it was returning for a Christmas special this year and a 15th season in 2025.

The show has yet to be officially renewed for a 16th season, with Disney Plus also now involved in producing the series with the BBC.

However, Ncuti’s comments do seem to contradict recent ones made by showrunner Russell T Davies.

Writing in the most recent issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Russell explained: ‘The decision to commission Season 3 won’t be made until after Season 2 has transmitted. And that’s always been the deal since the start. Hey, we might even have a day off!

‘Although maybe not, with the whole of TWB (The War Between the Land and the Sea) to complete and the rest of Season 2 to hammer into shape. So the Great Work goes on.

‘I always think: every episode of Doctor Who is someone’s first episode. Imaginations will be sparking across the world, as these 14 episodes boil and bristle and burst on to the screen.’

When Ncuti was announced as the 14th Doctor, the actor said he was ‘deeply honoured, beyond excited and a little bit scared’ to have been cast, but would endeavour to ‘handle the unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care’.

The Christmas Special Joy to the World was written by former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and will star Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan as Joy, whose potentially lonely holiday in London is interrupted for a madcap adventure with The Doctor.

Then, in the new year, Ncuti and co-star Millie Gibson (who plays Ruby Sunday) will have some company in the TARDIS as Andor’s Varada Sethu joins as a new companion.

The Graham Norton Show airs Fridays at 10.40pm on BBC One. Doctor Who returns next for the Christmas Special on BBC.
