A major motorway has been forced to close after heavy rain caused flash flooding on the carriageway.

National Highways have warned that delays will increase after the M5 was closed southbound between junction 14 for Falfield and 15 for the M4.

A spokesperson said: ‘The M5 is closed southbound between J14 Falfield and J15 M4.

‘This is for safety reason following heavy rain and subsequent flooding of the carriageway.

‘There are 20 minute delays at present but these will increase.’

The closure has been put in place for safety reasons only a few weeks after the motorway was flooded in the same area.

The area is covered by a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, with some areas potentially seeing up to 50mm of rainfall today.
