There are some new options for anyone seeking a PS5 console on the cheap, including an extra price cut at Amazon.

While Sony has often given temporary discounts to the PlayStation 5 over the past year, the company has now started selling a cheaper alternative.

Second-hand PlayStation 5’s have been widely available since the console launched in 2020, but there’s always a risk of whether the machine is in good enough condition – especially when it comes to buying from online marketplaces like eBay.

Sony, however, is now selling refurbished consoles through the PlayStation Direct store, which should (in theory, at least) be more reliable than the average retailer.

The refurbished machines have been returned to Sony due to a fault, or simply because someone wanted a refund after opening the box. According to Sony, the ‘certified refurbished’ consoles are ‘as good as new’ and have been ‘extensively cleaned’ and ‘tested’.

The best part is they come with a 12-month manufacturer’s warranty, so you can get it fixed or replaced for free within that window if it is faulty.

In the UK, the only refurbished PlayStation 5 console currently being sold is the launch model with a disc drive (so not the Slim redesign), priced at £389.99. In the US, the same refurbished console costs $399.99, while the digital edition without a disc drive costs $349.99.

  • PS5 launch model with disc drive (US) – $399.99
  • PS5 launch model digital edition (US) – $349.99

While it’s a significant reduction from the full price PS5 Slim, which usually costs £479.99, the PlayStation Direct store is currently selling new PS5 Slim consoles at the reduced price of £429.99, and £339.99 for the digital edition, until October 14.

For an even better deal, Amazon is selling the PS5 Slim with a disc drive for only £419.98, which is the best option right now if you want a brand new console.

This wave of discounts comes ahead of the launch of the PS5 Pro, which boasts enhanced visuals and 2TB of storage. The console costs £699.99 and launches November 7 worldwide.

At launch, the PS5 Pro will enhance around 50 games in total, including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Hogwarts Legacy.
