A new cat-and-mouse thriller starring an Oscar-winning actor is poised to be the show of the year.

Today, Sky dropped the first official full-length trailer, and a host of production pictures, of the hotly anticipated drama The Day of the Jackal.

It stars Eddie Redmayne as lone assassin the Jackal who is being pursued by a British intelligence officer Bianca (Lashana Lynch).

If the action-packed trailer is anything to go by, Eddie, 42, has made a strong case for himself to become the next James Bond.

In the trailer, Eddie as the Jackal is seen creating chaos and destruction, from setting off bombs to shootouts, at destinations across Europe including Paris.

Meanwhile, Lashana’s character Bianca is seen getting increasingly frantic as she struggles to hunt down the Jackal before he strikes again.

On YouTube, fans have been clearing out their November schedules to watch The Day of the Jackal after watching the trailer.

Among them is @kayell1010, who raved: ‘Looks thrilling. Competitive day up against Cross on Prime, Silo on Apple the next day, and Landman on Paramount a few days later.’

Impressed by the action sequences, @christopherofficial commented in reference to the Bourne franchise: ‘Jason Bourne things.’

@anamikapramanik1910 swooned: ‘I’ll watch anything Eddie Redmayne is in.’

It comes after claims Eddie will be earning £1,000,000 per episode of 10-part series The Day of the Jackal.

Produced for Sky by the production company behind Downton Abbey, Carnival Films, the thriller is also said to be the channel’s most expensive show ever with a budget of £100million.

A source told The Mirror: ‘Many TV companies and broadcasters are struggling with budgets being squeezed but not with high-end drama for a global audience involving the streamer.

‘If you can do a deal with one of them, you can absolutely break the bank.’

Sky declined to comment when previously contacted by Metro. Eddie’s reps have also been approached.

The Day of the Jackal is a TV adaptation of the 1971 book of the same name by Frederick Forsyth.

It was also turned into a film in 1973, which starred the likes of Edward Fox, Michael Lonsdale and Derek Jacobi, and in 1997 with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere.

The Sky reboot stars Money Heist actress Ursula Corbero as Nuria, a character who is close to the Jackal’s personal life, and Game Of Thrones actor Charles Dance as Timothy Winthrop.

Other cast members include The Crown’s Khalid Abdalla, The Capture star Lia Williams, The Walking Dead’s Eleanor Matsuura, and Slow Horses actor Nick Blood.

The series has been written and adapted by Ronan Bennett, creator of the Bafta TV award-winning series Top Boy, and the lead director is Brian Kirk.

The Day of the Jackal is coming to Sky Atlantic and streaming service Now on November 7.
