2024 has been a nostalgic year when it comes to fashion, with low-rise denim, UGGs and ballet flats all bursting back onto the scene in a mass resurgence of 00s staples.

Many of these have been welcomed with open arms, but one more divisive trend from the era is also weaselling its way back into unsuspecting wardrobes— and it may not be so well received by those who lived through ‘indie sleaze’ first time around.

That’s right, ageing millennials shorts over tights are once again in vogue.

The look is one that was donned on school mufti days, in Tumblr posts and on JustGirlyThings blogs, as well as by celebs like Miley Cyrus, Pixie Lott and Alexa Chung on red carpets.

In the past week however, the signature 2000s ‘shorts and tights’ ensemble has officially risen from the grave.

Gen Z clothing brand owner and fashion influencer, Aimee Smale, posted a TikTok of herself in New York wearing a cropped black coat, black shades, light denim mini shorts, black sheer tights and pointed-toe heels.

Captioned, ’10-year-old me is screaming, tights + denim,’ the post hit more than half a million views, but received a mixed reception.

‘Looks more chic than when I would wear the Topshop turn up ones with converse,’ commented TikToker @kkmx_, while another, Hannah, added: ‘Omg I wore this combo all the time, I love it so much. I’m going to wear it again!’

Others weren’t as keen though, including @ashleigh.j0rdan who wrote: ‘I do not accept this trend coming back.’

‘this is a trend I could never get in to, something about tights under my shorts doesn’t sit right with me,’ said another user.

Aimee isn’t the only influencer to rock the trend as of late either; Saffron Barker, (who has nearly two million Instagram followers) recently shared a series of photos wearing denim shorts and sheer tights, this time styled with large cream jumper, Louis Vuitton blazer, black shades and brown boots with white knee-high socks.

It was giving Kate Moss festival season circa 2008, and the comments were in full support, with @katieward_x writing: ‘Omg obsessing over this fit.’

Keep in mind, before you dig out your teenage gig attire ready to unleash it on the world once more: the look has been slightly modified in the decades that have passed.

In place of the classic turn-up shorts of times gone by, it’s now all about teeny-tiny micro shorts, popularised by the likes of Emily Ratajkowski and Sophie Turner after years of Dadcore-style jorts.

And in place of the thick black tights, or in some cases leggings, we’re opting for a sheer pair now, giving the OOs trend a bit more of a luxe feel and leaving behind all ‘awkward tween’ energy.

There have been catwalk nods to the trend recently that can steer you in the right direction: Chanel’s autumn/winter 2020 show saw monogrammed tights paired with tailored shorts and pirate boots, while Saint Laurent featured grown-up black leather and lace alongside gossamer-thin hosiery (some adorned with playful polka dots) on the runway for spring/summer 2021.

As we all know though, just because something made it onto the runway doesn’t necessarily mean we should all start wearing it, so if you’d prefer to let shorts and tights remain a thing of the past, we won’t hold it against you.

But, for those bold enough to revive their 2000s selves in the name of fashion, blast some Katy Perry and layer up.
