23 dead, many missing after DRC shipwreck --[Reported by Umva mag]

A boat carrying passengers and goods capsized Thursday morning in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), killing several people.

The boat, which had set out from Minova in South Kivu, was on its way to Goma when it capsized near the port of Kituku.

The route is often used to avoid areas controlled by M23 rebels and Rwandan troops, according to a presidential statement issued early Thursday evening.

The preliminary death toll stands at 23, including several children, and 58 survivors, with many still missing.

Local authorities have already transferred 18 bodies to morgues.

President Félix Tshisekedi praised the work of rescue workers and the DRC armed forces, while calling for support for the victims and their families.

An investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the accident and to improve transportation safety.

Erik Nyindu Kibambe, Director of Communications for the Presidency, stressed the need to strengthen measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
