The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore has called on his compatriots to be patriotic and demonstrate their true citizenship of Burkina Faso.

Speaking on the occasion of the 2nd National Day of Patriotic Commitment and Citizen Participation on Wednesday, President Traore said: “For the nation, from now on, treason will be the most serious criminal crime.”

Addressing the theme: “For a strong and sovereign nation, let’s not betray our homeland,”, he said: “The enemies of the fatherland are traitors and their accomplices.”

According to him, traitors can be recognized by acts of collaboration with the enemy, by espionage or by providing logistics or intelligence to a foreign power and by desertion from their duties.

For Captain Traoré, the assassination of Captain Thomas Sankara on October 15, 1987, is “a perfect example of treason”.

“Don’t be a traitor. Every Burkinabé must be vigilant and commit himself to banishing treason from his daily actions,” the Head of State insisted.

He called on his compatriots to express their true sense of belonging to the motherland through concrete actions.

“Those who love their environment always keep it clean, and those who love Burkina Faso must keep it clean. Our health facilities, our homes, our neighborhoods and villages, our communes, our towns, our places of work and worship, our cemeteries – let’s always keep them clean. That’s also patriotism, so don’t go any further,” the head of state added.

He also solemnly called on the customary and religious authorities to participate fully in these days with teachings and messages, recalling during the various services the importance and necessity for each citizen to cultivate the authentic values of our homeland.
