Condemnation as Senegalese MP attacked in Lome --[Reported by Umva mag]

Guy Marius Sagna, a member of the ECOWAS parliament, was attacked in Lome, Togo where he was invited by the Togolese opposition.

The Senegalese authorities have condemned the attack.

On September 29, Sagna, a Senegalese lawmaker is a representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The incident occurred during his participation in the third extraordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliamentary Committee.

The attack took place during a meeting organised by Togolese citizens, in particular the People’s Majority Dynamics (DMP).

Mr. Sagna claimed to have been brutally attacked by “riot police” at the beginning of the meeting when he invited the audience to sing the Togolese national anthem.

In response to the violence, the Senegalese Ministry of Integration and Foreign Affairs issued a statement Sunday night strongly condemning the act as unspeakable.

The Senegalese authorities have also contacted the MP to check on his health. On X (formerly Twitter), Aminata Touré, senior representative of the Senegalese president, expressed her “indignation at this cowardly act” and called for “the perpetrators to be swiftly identified and brought to justice.”

In the same vein, Togolese MP Brigitte Adjamagbo-Johnson was asked to ensure the protection of Mr. Sagna’s physical integrity and has contacted the Togolese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to this effect.

According to Senegalese diplomats, the government in Lomé has promised to take the necessary measures to guarantee the deputy’s safety.

Dakar has also called for an investigation to clarify the circumstances attending to the incident.
