FIFA have made a deal with EA Sports FC rival eFootball to bring a new title to the FIFAe World Cup, saying it’s a ‘commitment to the advancement of esports’.

There have been quite a few changes in the world of football sims in recent years, the most obvious being FIFA and Electronic Arts going their separate ways in 2022, after several decades together, and a subsequent name change of the FIFA video game series to EA Sports FC.

Additionally, Konami decided to rename its Pro Evolution Soccer franchise to eFootball after the COVID pandemic, making it a free-to-play title with lots of freebies for your Dream Team.

FIFA and Konami never used to work together before, but they’ve come together to bring eFootball to the FIFAe World Cup, as a ‘commitment to the advancement of esports’.

The FIFAe World Cup is operated by FIFA and includes a number of open qualifying tournaments for fans across different games, including Football Manager and Rocket League, but since FIFA and EA parted ways EA Sports FC hasn’t been one of them.

Leaving EA Sports FC behind, FIFA and Konami have now signed an agreement to add eFootball into the mix, with two competitions of its own.

As part of the agreement, eFootball gets one tournament for console fans, in a 2v2 format, and one for mobile, which is 1v1.

eFootball qualifiers for the FIFAe World Cup start today, but the date and prize pool for the actual event has yet to be announced (read more about how to qualify here).

‘The objective of this collaboration is to further boost the joy of the global football community through esports. By allowing players to represent their nations through dedicated competitions, this initiative will take the connection with the community to a new level,’ says Konami in a press release.

‘We are incredibly excited to join forces with Konami. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission to promote football globally and to provide a platform for players to showcase their skills.

‘We truly believe in an inclusive ecosystem which allows different communities to be part of the FIFAe competitions,’ says Romy Gai, Chief Business Officer at FIFA.

Not everyone can qualify, however, only fans from a handful of eligible countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, England, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea Republic, Malaysia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Thailand, and Turkey.
