 Paris – The French government announces it wants to submit a new immigration law to Parliament “early 2025,” just one year after the heated debates provoked by a previous text and at a time when the EU plans to further tighten its migration policy.

“There will be a need for a new law,” notably to allow “the extension of detention periods in administrative detention centers” for illegal immigrants considered dangerous, said government spokesperson Maud Bregeon on BFMTV. 

One of the options being considered is to extend the maximum detention period from 90 to 210 days, which is currently only possible in cases of terrorist offenses.

Other provisions could also be considered, added the spokesperson, as there should be “no taboo in terms of protecting the French.”

This announcement comes ahead of the European summit on October 17 and 18 in Brussels, where strengthening controls at the EU’s external borders and accelerating the return of illegal immigrants will be discussed. (October 13, 2024)
