New research highlights how cost of living issues are holding young couples back from starting families.

The UCL Centre for Longitudinal Studies has been following a group of 16,000 people born in the 1989-1990 school year.

Of the 7,200 who took part in its most recent survey, just over 2,000 said they either want a child or want more children but were not trying to conceive.

Of those, more than a quarter (28%) said they are being put off by financial reasons such as housing and childcare costs and employment constraints.

The findings suggest hundreds of thousands of people in their early-to-mid thirties are avoiding pregnancies for this reason. The surveys were carried out in 2022 – before the recent inflation crisis – so the true number could be even higher today.
