Big Brother winner Nadia Almada has hit out at ITV for ‘failing’ her after comments made by one of the 2024 housemates.

The reality star, 47, made history in 2004 when she became the show’s first transgender winner.

Reflecting on her win, which left her £63,500 richer and an overnight celebrity, Nadia told Metro.co.uk last year: ‘The best part of Big Brother was the acceptance and embracement.’

She added: ‘I’d like to see another trans person in the house for sure. I want to see representation and inclusivity, and real people – the foundations of what originally made the show so great.’

The first series of the revived reality show last year saw Hallie bravely coming out to her co-stars, with Nadia later commenting how ‘protective’ she felt after the ‘beautiful moment’.

However, she’s now had a different reaction to one of the contestants this year, accusing him of making transgressive comments.

28-year-old Ryan introduced himself as ‘opinionated’, and that he was ‘cheeky’ but ‘never want to hurt anyone’s feelings’.

He said: ‘There’s a lot of woke people out there, it’s all well and good if you want to use certain pronouns and I get that, it gets a bit confusing sometimes with people identifying as a spoon and whatnot.’

His comments sparked outrage from viewers with @nothing_human blasting: ‘It’s somewhat ironic that he thinks people are identifying as a spoon, and here’s Ryan identifying as a complete spanner.’

@SoozUK said: ‘Getting confused over pronouns is a bit rich from someone who identifies as funny.’

‘So he had one minute to tell the world that he’s an ignorant bigoted t**t,’ @Woke_66 added.

And now Nadia has weighed in, sharing on Instagram: ‘Big Brother made an editorial decision to show Ryan making transgressive comments.

‘The clip was pre-recorded – they likely had lots of footage to choose from, but that’s what they went for.

‘They did it to gain publicity for the show and use our outrage for clicks, views and votes.

‘BBUK had the opportunity to educate Ryan, instead you’ve let him show himself up.

‘@bbuk, dear friend and confidant, you have failed me, the #LGBTQIA community and society at large.

‘This is 2024 not 2004.’

A Big Brother spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘Housemates receive Respect and Inclusion training and an extensive briefing from the Big Brother Senior team to prepare them for living in the House and to set out Big Brother’s expectation for appropriate behaviour and language.’

This comes after Nadia previously told Metro.co.uk that she doesn’t believe trans rights have come as far as she might have hoped, speaking nearly two decades after she won.

‘I think we are almost going backwards. It’s very sad for me to say that and I think this is why I’m coming out again,’ she began.

She added: ‘I need to speak louder and I need to bang harder on certain doors to remind people what they once saw. I believe in dialogue, all parties need to come together. We can sit down and talk.’

Big Brother continues at 9pm on ITV2.
