CAF investigates Nigerian players’ Libya ‘nightmare’ --[Reported by Umva mag]
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday says it is investigating why Nigerian Super Eagles players and their delegation were left stranded at an airport in Libya for more than 12 hours.
CAF in a statement expressed concerns about situation of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles who were in Libya for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights whom they defeated 1-nil in the first leg in Oyo last Friday.
Several members of the team and their coaching staff claimed they were abandoned at an airport used by Libya for its Hajj operations after their plane was rerouted from Benghazi where it was originally scheduled to land.
According to them, the Libyan authorities had been hostile to them while the country’s FA did not arrange to ferry them to Benghazi for the match which was scheduled for Tuesday.
It will no longer hold after the Nigerian FA said it would support the decision of its players who were left tired, frustrated and without food.
CAF condemned the conditions of the Nigerian football delegation as unacceptable, stressing that the body is committed to protecting all teams and officials without exception.
Libya whose players and officials had complained of a similar experience at a Nigerian airport before the first leg, had not commented.
While warning it would take disciplinary action against those found to have broken its rules CAF says its disciplinary board is investigating the issue.
The continent’s football governing body said it has contacted both Nigerian and Libyan authorities to resolve the situation but its disciplinary board would decide on the appropriate punishment for any infraction against its rules.
