Legendary hairdresser Trevor Sorbie has shared his determination to make it until Christmas, after he was given just months to live.

The 75-year-old, who founded charity My Own Hair to help other cancer patients, was diagnosed with bowel cancer after he lost a worrying amount of blood.

In June, Trevor and his partner Carole were told he only has months to live, and in September realised that no treatment could help him.

However, he’s still determined to see Christmas this year and never wakes up feeling sorry for himself, despite his health struggles.

Appearing on This Morning today, Trevor recalled the symptom he had before his diagnosis, which prompted him to go to hospital.

He said: ‘It started when I lost a lot of blood one night and I was unusually disturbed about that.’

After being sent to a hospital in London, Trevor was informed that he had bowel cancer.

‘I had a little panic attack in the office, and came out of there, and look at Carole and she looked at me, and we were both speechless.’

‘We were walking down the road, and I just didn’t know what to say, so I had a big din and tonic, and that helped!’ he laughed.

The cancer then spread to Trevor’s liver, and he had to have two six hour operations but a tumour is still there now because it’s too close to a major blood vessel.

Carole added that the couple had been ‘in denial’ when they were told in June that Trevor only had ‘a few months, maybe six’ to live.

However, the stylist, who was appointed an MBE in 2004, is still remaining positive.

He said: ‘I never wake up thinking, “Oh poor me, I’ve got cancer, I feel sorry for myself,” I know I’ve got it here [his body], but I haven’t got it here [his mind].’

Trevor added that he still goes to work a few days a week, because his passion feels like his ‘medicine’.

The salon-owner continued: ‘I won’t accept… I had a nurse the other day come round to assess me, and I said, “Will I make Christmas?” and she said, “I don’t know,” and I said, “I damn well will.”‘

Trevor is not only remaining positive for himself, but for his partner Carole, who spoke about receiving bereavement counselling to help her through his diagnosis.

‘I get my strength through this man, he is guiding me through a good death,’ she said.

‘Everyday, we’re thankful for the day we have.’

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
