The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has conducted a two-day workshop in Abuja to enhance the capacity of judicial officers from its Court of Justice.

The training focused on settling trade disputes within the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and ECOWAS protocols.

The workshop, organized by ECOWAS’ Directorates of Trade and Legal Affairs, aimed to prepare judicial officers to effectively interpret and apply dispute resolution mechanisms under the AfCFTA and ECOWAS framework.

Kolawole Sofola, Director of Trade at ECOWAS, emphasized the importance of a robust judicial system for supporting trade liberalization and regional integration. Judge Sengu Mohamed Koroma commended ECOWAS’ commitment to cooperation between its institutions and member states for the successful implementation of the AfCFTA.

This workshop represents a significant step towards ensuring a strong, transparent, and predictable legal framework for intra-regional trade, contributing to the development of West Africa’s competitiveness on the global stage.
