Foreign minister of Ethiopia Taye Atske Selassie has been sworn in as president of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, replacing Sahle-Work Zewde, whose seven-year term in office expired this week.

After being sworn in at the joint opening session of the House of Peoples Representatives (the lower house of the parliament) and House of Federation (the upper house of the parliament) on Monday Atske Selassie promised to work hard to further register sustainable economic growth in the county.

 

Atske Selassie was born in Debarq Gondar in northern Ethiopia. He received post graduation in Addis Ababa University and Lancaster University in England in Political Science International Relations and Strategic Studies.

 

Atske Selassie had worked as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ethiopian Ambassador to Egypt. On 8 February 2024, he succeeded Demeke Mekonnen as Minister of Foreign Affairs until he became the head of state of the east African country on Monday.

 

Atske Selassie won the majority votes of members of the two parliaments.
