A man can thank his lucky pumpkin for helping him win a £115,000 lottery prize.

Roy Story was partaking in his Halloween tradition of selling pumpkins and did not think much of it.

‘I raise a few pumpkins every year and sell them,’ said Story, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

‘Someone (gave) me $10 for a pumpkin and I used that to buy the ticket.’

Story, of Hertford in Perquimans County, said he loves to play crosswords.

‘I play them all,’ he said.

With the pumpkin money, Story bought a $5 Xtreme Cashword ticket on Monday morning from the Sun Farms gas station on US 17 South in Elizabeth City.

At first, he did not realize his prize was in the six digits.

‘I didn’t have my glasses on,’ he said. ‘I thought it won $1,000.’

Story claimed his $150,000 prize at the lottery headquarters later that same day. After state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $107,251, or around £82,213.

The man from Hertford in Perquimans County plans to use the money to purchase a truck.

‘Wow congratulations to you,’ a person with an NC Education Lottery account commented.

Story is the first winner of the Xtreme Cashword game, which launched earlier this month with six top prizes of $150,000 each. The other five are still up for grabs.

Funds from the state lottery were recently used to provide a $28.4million grant to Perquimans County to help construct a new school.

Story is not the only American who won a lottery prize in an unexpected way.

In May 2021, a woman who did not know she missed the cutoff to buy a Powerball ticket wound up winning a $2million prize in another drawing.

‘It was definitely a shock!’ said Elizabeth Johnson of Lucama.

‘When I got the message saying that I had won I thought, “Well, I didn’t even play tonight.”’
