A newly added film on Netflix has caught fans off guard with its tear-jerking power, given that it has actually been housed in the category of comedy.

When fans browse that genre, they will be offered the 2022 movie A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks.

But while its classification and poster – which shows Hollywood treasure Hanks in an anorak, frowning slightly – suggest nothing too emotionally taxing, viewers have taken to social media to reveal how the movie actually had them blubbing.

‘I was trying to find a movie to watch on Netflix, so under the COMEDY category I chose the movie A Man Called Otto not knowing what it was about and now I’m bawling my freaking eyes out with that,’ admitted Kaylee on X, who also said she was not prepared for it to be ‘so sad’.

‘Just watched A Man Called Otto and I’ve cried so much I’ve got a headache,’ commented @natsabin.  ‘Be kind to people who might be having a hard time.’

‘Watched A Man called Otto on Netflix yesterday and it somehow broke my heart and then put it all back together. What an incredible movie, cried lots,’ added Cristina Hart, while Kathleen O’Loughlin seemed to have some awareness of what was in store as she observed ‘there are NOT enough Kleenex in this house’ when she clocked the film’s two-hour runtime.

‘A Man Called Otto on Netflix is such a beautiful film, the way I cried,’ posted @nicolePhiri92, as @krisdana25 praised it as a ‘very good movie’ that she understood and related to.

‘I’d watch it again, I just have to first replace the minerals I cried out during those 2 hours,’ she joked.

A Man Called Otto is directed by Bond filmmaker Marc Foster and based on the bestselling novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.

Otto (Hanks) is grumpy and has given up on life following the loss of his wife, wanting to end it all.

When a young family moves in nearby, he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol (Mariana Treviño), leading to a friendship that will turn his world around.

A Man Called Otto is streaming on Netflix in the UK and the US now.
