Officers from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 5th Division and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) 202nd Brigade convened on Wednesday, September 25, in Tanzania’s Karagwe District to discuss cross-border security.

This 11th bilateral meeting aimed to strengthen security cooperation between the two nations and address cross-border crimes, according to the RDF.

The military officers reviewed the progress made in combating illegal cross-border activities and addressing potential security threats. They also discussed new strategies to overcome ongoing challenges faced by border communities involved in legitimate trade.

The discussion underscored the crucial need for continued collaboration between the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) to maintain a secure environment conducive to cross-border business.

Brigadier General Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, Commander of the TPDF 202nd Brigade, emphasized the positive results of these recurring security meetings, initiated under the leadership of the two countries’ presidents.

“Our ongoing cooperation creates a safe environment for the citizens of Rwanda and Tanzania to engage in business freely. It’s essential to remain committed to addressing any emerging security concerns along our shared border,” Kwiligwa said in a statement from the RDF.

Colonel Pascal Munyankindi, Acting Commander of the RDF 5th Infantry Division, expressed appreciation to Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania for establishing a platform for military leaders to discuss tactical security challenges.

Munyankindi also highlighted the success of the previous meeting held in May 2024 in Rwanda’s Kayonza District, which disrupted criminal activities along the border.

“We have made significant progress since our last meeting, and this ongoing collaboration continues to enhance security along the border,” he noted.

The security meeting included visits to key areas along the border, particularly in the Kyerwa and Karagwe districts.

Local traders involved in cross-border commerce shared positive feedback on the impact of the security cooperation between the two nations.

Fokasi Tunda Marico, a trader from Kafunjo in Karagwe District, reflected on his 25 years of cross-border business experience.

“The security measures implemented by both governments have greatly facilitated trade. Rwandan soldiers are always welcoming, and their presence at the border ensures smooth operations,” Marico said.

He also encouraged continued visits and close cooperation between Tanzanian and Rwandan forces to address future challenges, ensuring that cross-border trade remains uninterrupted.
