The A-tractor may face new EU regulations – final negotiations begin --[Reported by Umva mag]

Brussels – The issue of faster A-tractors is now moving into the final stretch, as final negotiations begin between the EU Parliament and EU member countries on updated driving license rules.

The Parliament’s transport committee voted late on Monday with a large majority in favor of starting the negotiations. The package includes, among other things, rules on what health check requirements should be set for different types of driving licenses and what probation periods should apply for new drivers.

For A-tractors, an increase in maximum speed to 45 kilometers per hour and an age limit of 16 years is proposed. Several of the Swedish members have promised to push to keep the age limit at 15. However, they are expected to have an extremely hard time gaining support, as both the EU Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers want an increase.

The goal is to reach a final agreement before the end of the year.

In Sweden, it is popular to drive A-tractors among young people, especially outside the big cities. The number of A-tractors has increased explosively in recent years.

An A-tractor is a converted car, which according to the law should not be able to drive faster than 30 kilometers per hour.

The original idea with the A-tractors’ predecessors, the so-called epa-tractors, was that they should function as work vehicles in agriculture.
