WWE legend Randy Orton had to comfort rising star Je’Von Evans after the ending of their high profile match didn’t go to plan.

The 44-year-old veteran, who made his debut on SmackDown in 2002, faced off with the 20-year-old rookie on this week’s episode of NXT as two generations of wrestlers met in the ring.

After a slick and exciting bout which gave Evans plenty of time to shine against the decorated former world champion, the young star went for a corkscrew senton from the top rope.

As he fell to the mat, Orton jumped and went to hit his signature RKO, having built a reputation over the years for hitting it out of nowhere in all sounds of situations.

However, the spectacular move didn’t come off, as Evans appeared to over rotate, landing parallel to the Viper instead of falling into the move head-on.

Orton’s veteran instincts kicked in as he picked up his opponent and hit an RKO right away for the pin, and after the bell he was seen comforting the young prospect.

Evans looked to be apologising for the mishap, but Orton was seen telling him: ‘It’s OK. You’re the f****** man,’ before raising his hand to soak up the cheers from the crowd.

Speaking to WWE after the bout, the iconic star had more praise for his opponent and clearly sees a lot of potential in him.

‘I got to work with an incredible talent tonight, only 20 years old. Dude, I’m very excited to see where he goes in the future. He’s gonna be around for as long as he wants to be,’ he said.

Orton – who admitted while they have ‘a lot in common’, there are ‘a lot of differences’ there too – urged Evans to stay on track.

‘I think he needs to keep doing what he’s doing, but what I noticed, first and foremost, after just meeting him for the first time today, he’s incredibly humble,’ he continued.

‘He has nothing but respect for the business and the guys like me, the old fuddy-duddies that have been here for over 20 years, and you know what, that means a lot to me. That respect for our industry, it goes a long way, so that respect, I give right back to him tenfold.’

The third-generation wrestler has been open about his own attitude problems early in his career, and admitted he might not have reacted well if he’d been treated in the same way as Drew McIntyre, who clawed his way back to the top after being released in 2014.

He told Metro.co.uk in 2020: ‘Knowing how I was back when I was young and making those mistakes, those bad decisions, getting in trouble and getting a second, third, fourth chance…

‘Back then, I don’t know that I would have reacted well. I don’t know that I would have done the same thing Drew did. I think everything happens for a reason.’
