Demi Moore has updated fans on Bruce Willis’ condition after he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

The Die Hard actor, 69, announced his diagnosis in February 2023, with his family revealing that he would be ‘stepping away’ from his successful career on the big screen.

It brought to an end a career which had spanned five decades, with his family and friends now caring for him as he makes rare public appearances alongside them.

Demi, 61, and Bruce were married between 1987 and 2000 and have three children together – Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30. Despite their split 24 years ago, they still remain close friends.

In a brand new interview, the Ghosts actress has provided an insight into his condition.

Speaking at the 2024 Hamptons International Film Festival, she said: ‘The disease is what the disease is. And I think you have to be in real deep acceptance of what that is. But for where he’s at, he is stable,’ according to Film News.

Demi also spoke of how she tells her kids to behave around their dad: ‘What I always encourage is to just meet [him] where [he’s] at. When you’re holding on to what was, I think it’s a losing game.’

Her comments echo sentiments she already shared on the Drew Barrymore Show in September, when she said: ‘I think he’s doing [okay] – you know, given the givens. He is in a stable place.’

The Ghost actress continued: ‘You know, it’s what I say to my kids is you meet them where they’re at. You don’t hold on to who they were or what you want them to be, but who they are in this moment.

What is frontotemporal dementia?

The NHS describes frontotemporal dementia as: ‘an uncommon type of dementia that causes problems with behaviour and language,’ adding: ‘Frontotemporal dementia affects the front and sides of the brain (the frontal and temporal lobes)’.

Symptoms include:

  • Personality and behaviour changes (acting inappropriately or impulsively)
  • Language problems (speaking slowly or putting words in the wrong order)
  • Struggling with other mental abilities (planning and organisation)
  • Problems with memory.

There may also be physical problems after diagnosis, such as slow or stiff movements, muscle weakness, or difficulty swallowing.

‘And from that, there is such beauty and joy and loving and sweetness. When I’m in LA, I go over every week, and I really treasure the time that we all share.’

Bruce and Demi split in 1998 before finalising their divorce two years later, with the former going on to wed Emma Heming in 2009, with whom he welcomed daughters Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10.

Emma previously hit back at claims that the Friends and Armageddon actor’s life has ‘no more joy’ following his diagnosis.

She said: ‘It’s Sunday morning and I’m triggered. I just got clickbaited. I’m just scrolling, minding my own business, and just saw a headline – and got clickbaited – that had to do with my own family.

‘The headline basically there is no more joy in my husband. Now I can just tell you that is far from the truth. I need society, and whoever is writing these stupid headlines, to stop scaring people.’

She continued: ‘[People will think] once they get a diagnosis of some kind of neuro-cognitive disease that that’s it, it’s over. Let’s pack it up. Nothing else to see here. We’re done. No, it is the complete opposite.’
