Penny Lancaster broke down in tears on Loose Women today, causing her co-host to rush to comfort her.

Hosts Nadia Sawalha, Charlene White, Penny Lancaster, and Frankie Bridge discussed the topic of breast cancer on the show’s latest episode, sharing stories of how they’d personally been affected by the condition.

Penny began to explain how she has a group of close friends she calls ‘her secret circle.’

She then showed a picture of the group, including her maid-of-honour and sister-in-law, Louise, Rod Stewart’s sister.

She began: ‘I have this group of girls called the secret circle, and that name came about just before I got married – there they are – my maid of honour Louise, she…’

The host then broke down in tears, stifling sobs.

Charlene quickly rose to her feet, exclaiming, ‘Oh, Pen,’ and rushed to the other side of the panel to embrace and comfort her co-host and friend.

Penny soon gathered herself enough to speak as Nadia asked, ‘And that’s your sister-in-law, Louise?’

Penny nodded in confirmation before continuing: ‘The funny thing is she never cried about it; I’ve just been crying for her. She is incredibly strong. It was about 14 years ago she was diagnosed. And we did a walk for her, me and my secret circle. And back then it was about one in nine who was diagnosed, of course, now its one and 7.’

The host, who’s been married to Stewart since 2007, had to once again choke back tears.

She went on, her voice breaking: ‘And we sort of sat down afterward, after the walk, and we said, “You know, it could be one of us.” Very shortly afterwards, it was my third IVF, I fell pregnant and I was so excited to tell them the news and they didn’t want to have to tell me in that same phone call that Louise had found a lump.

‘She was so brave and she was only 36! So with the NHS only screening at 50, women under the age of 50 must do that self-check because that was the only way she found it because of the advice breast cancer care had given and about the checking.’

She concluded: ‘Women under the age of 40, their breasts are much more dense. So it’s harder to actually detect those lumps.

‘There’s a misconception that there’s no pain with breast cancer and she felt pain.’

Louise has previously spoken about her experience battling cancer and discovering a lump in her breast the same day that Penny and her brother Rod Stewart discovered they were pregnant.

She told The Daily Mail: ‘I got up, and as I did, I suddenly realised my right breast was sore and uncomfortable. I pressed the palm of my hand flat on to my nipple, and directly behind it I felt a lump. It was like a cross between a pea and a broad bean.’

She soon discovered she had stage three breast cancer, a diagnosis she subsequently overcame through treatment.
