BRUSSELS – The majority of Bulgarians (60 percent) express optimism about the future of the United Europe, according to the data from a Eurobarometer survey presented by the European Parliament.

Over half of Bulgarians – 51% express a positive attitude towards the Community. Asked whether the country benefits from its EU membership, 53% of Bulgarians respond positively, and 61% believe that pan-European actions affect their daily lives. For 53 percent of Bulgarians, the country’s membership in the Community is important.

The research shows that Bulgarians value the EU highly for job opportunities (47 percent compared to 24 percent in other EU countries). Bulgarians also highly appreciate the cooperation opportunities between European countries, contributing to peace and security, as well as economic growth, provided by the membership.

Nearly half (48 percent) of Bulgarian survey participants express a positive attitude towards the European Parliament, with this sentiment most common among those aged 25-39 and those who completed their education after the age of 20.

The survey shows that in the European elections this summer, 66 percent of Bulgarians did not vote, compared to 49 percent in the EU. The main reason for not voting, as indicated by 40% of Bulgarians, is a lack of trust in politics in general, while 30% say that their vote would not change anything. Those who did vote note the rise in the cost of living – 56% and the economic situation in the country – 53% as the primary reasons. (03.10.2024)
