The Regional Forum on Good Governance and Anti-Corruption Policies was held in Tirana, bringing together representatives of civil society organizations from the region and public authorities to exchange best practices in the fight against corruption.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Albania, Elisa Spiropali, said at the forum that the fight against corruption is one of the most serious challenges. “After many dilemmas today, no one in the political salon has immunity, amnesty, there is no bunker to save them from the past and facing justice, whenever it is necessary,” she said. Spiropali emphasized that now no one is untouchable by justice.

In his speech at this forum, EU ambassador Silvio Gonzato emphasized that the fight against corruption is key for countries like Albania on their path towards EU membership.

“Corruption threatens security, widens inequalities, and erodes trust in institutions. The EU remains committed to supporting Albania in the fight against corruption through financial, technical, and strategic assistance,” said EU ambassador Silvio Gonzato.

According to him, starting from this year, Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Montenegro are also included in the EU rule of law reports, putting them on the same level as member states, helping them to identify and properly address these problems.

Furthermore, Gonzato added, “the new EU growth plan for the Western Balkans offers a new opportunity for strengthening and accelerating anti-corruption efforts.” (October 7th)
