A Love Island star who experienced suicidal thoughts after being ‘cancelled’ has said a call from ITV saved his life.

Following the reality show, Mitchel Taylor, 28, threw himself into the celebrity lifestyle, often attending glitzy parties.

However, the new lifestyle began to crumble when he found himself at the centre of damaging allegations about his behaviour at an exclusive Space NK event. Online influencers accused the TV personality of being ‘homophobic’ and ‘throwing money’ at a homeless man, while at the party.

At the time, he denied chucking the cash and stressed that his kind gesture had been taken out of context.

Addressing the homophobic remarks, he added: ‘This is probably the biggest accusation out of them all about being homophobic. I spoke to an influencer at the event and my words were, “I fancied you when you were straight”.

‘I can see how that can come across as homophobic, I’m really bad with my words sometimes, I was just nervous to meet this person because I am a fan.

‘I do apologise, it’s just when I’m in scenarios like that I can’t really get my words out correctly and I was just trying to be as respectful to that person as I could and I kind of got it completely wrong.’

After the incident, Mitch was dropped by his management and he began to receive death threats. His mental health rapidly declined, to the point where he didn’t want to leave his home.

‘This time last year I got cancelled for a false accusation. I don’t want to sound like a bad person, but before that I never took mental health seriously,’ he explained on the Tom’s Talk podcast.

‘It was always like, “It’s there and I get it”, but until it happened to me I felt I was bulletproof.’

Mitch continued: ‘I got cancelled. I couldn’t eat and couldn’t sleep. My mates were dragging me out. This memory will live in me until the day I die. I was trying to throw up because of anxiety.’

Heartbreakingly, Mitch said he had suicidal thoughts. ‘I’d never had the dark thoughts I had until then and it absolutely crushed me. The thoughts I had.. I wanted to kill myself, seriously. I was like “I can’t do it”,’ he explained through tears. The gas engineer began to question why he had signed up to take part in a reality series in the first place.

However, it was a call from ITV inviting him to take part in the All Stars series earlier this year that ‘saved’ him.

When they first posed the opportunity, Mitch asked if they were aware he’d been cancelled but he claims the production team responded to say they know it’s ‘b******t’.

Now, Mitch will always be grateful for them giving him the chance to have a positive focus.

He originally found fame on the 2023 series of Love Island, where he became known as ‘Messy Mitch’ due to his inability to pick one romantic partner. After making ‘good TV’ on his first round, Mitch said he did what he needed to do on the second swing.

Living up to his title, he couldn’t quite commit to his partner Liberty Poole, throughout the 16-day stint.

Mitch says he’s now much happier with a new management team, and plenty of work lined up. He is in a relationship with model Hayley Griffin, 24, who Mitch said has ‘took the pain away’.

Love Island is available to watch on ITVX.
