With winter on its way, and jumpers and scarves emerging from their dusty corners, a critical accessory during this time of the year is a steaming hot drink in hand.

But with coffee prices soaring (we recently heralded in the era of the £5 coffee) and the Pret subscription a distant memory, we don’t all have the spare cash to buy a daily flat white.

But now, Morrisons has announced that they’ll be offering an unlimited ‘Winter Refills Allowance’ on hot drinks across all its cafes nationwide – with prices starting as little as just £1.85.

A seeming play on the government’s winter fuel allowance, the supermarket giant says they’ll be ‘keeping customers warm this chilly season.’

Pret scraps 'too good to be true' coffee deal

This comes after Pret sparked outrage by scrapping its free drinks deal as part of its subscription plan only last month.

While subscribers were able to order up to five free drinks a day for a fixed rate of £30 a month, along with a 20% discount on food, customers can no longer enjoy these benefits. Since September, subscriptions have been priced at £10, and will include up to five half-price drinks a day, with no complementary discount on food.

Clare Clough, managing director of the cafe chain called the four-year-old scheme ‘too good to be true’, adding that they were now shifting their focus on ‘better value for everyone’ – subscribers and non-subscribers alike.

What is Morrisons’ ‘Winter Refills Allowance’?

A scheme introduced to help customers keep warm during the cold, the Winter Refills Allowance includes unlimited refills on all self-serve hot drinks at the Morrisons Café from teas and coffees to hot chocolates.

The offer is applicable in selected Morrison Cafes, on a wide range of their winter warmers, including fruit teas, lattes and cappuccinos.

Customers can also satisfy their sweet tooth by choosing to pick up a decadent slice of Victorian sponge cake or a tarty Sicilian Lemon Muffin for a small additional price, as the hot drink – dessert duo come for as cheap as £4.

Equally economical are Morrisons breakfast, lunch and dinner options, with a sandwich meal deal priced at £6.50, and free foods for kids under 16 accompanying adults who spend £5 or over on a meal.

Speaking of the initiative, Morrisons Café buyer Becky Wilson said: ‘We are always looking for ways to give our customers more reasons to visit our Cafés – and the Winter Refills Allowance does just that.’

‘As well as the quality food at affordable prices, our Cafés are a space for communities to connect, work or relax, and they can now do so over a warm mug of their choosing.’

Other outlets in the country offering similar ways to enjoy budget hot drinks include Wetherspoons, where customers can get unlimited hot drinks for a flat £1.56 – sometimes even cheaper – depending on the location.

You can walk-in anytime, from breakfast to closing, and enjoy free refills on coffee, teas and a range of drinks with choices ranging from flat white, cappuccino, latte, mocha, espresso, and hot chocolate.

Particularly popular among students and retirees, the chairman of the pub chain Tim Martin went as far as to note that ‘sales of Lavazza coffee are increasing,’ with ‘free refills thought to be responsible for spontaneous exhibitions of breakdancing among retired customers.’

Other coffee and bakery chains like Gail’s, Costa and Caffe Nero follow a loyalty stamp card style system, where you get a free drink after accumulating enough points by purchasing a certain number of drinks.
