Brussels/Ljubljana/Kranj – Ljubljana and Kranj have become the first Slovenian cities to be among the recipients of the European Commission awards for their contribution to climate neutrality. Alongside them, 18 cities, which have joined the Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart European Cities, will receive awards to be officially presented on October 22 in Strasbourg.

The “EU Mission Label” recognizes the cities’ plans to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 and is expected to facilitate access to public and private financing to help achieve this goal, according to the European Commission.

“The EU Mission Label celebrates the bold steps these 20 cities are taking towards climate neutrality. Their commitment paves the way for a sustainable and resilient future for all our communities. The Commission will continue to support them on this path,” announced European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth Iliana Ivanova. With the new 20, the total number of recipients will rise to 53.

“We can be genuinely proud of this recognition. We prepared the documents practically without error, in cooperation with citizens, public institutions, and other organizations and experts, including the economy,” said Matjaž Rakovec, Mayor of the Municipality of Kranj.

They intend to apply an inclusive and connected approach in the future. “It is now necessary to move from planning to implementation,” he said. (October 8)
