Hurricane Milton has made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm, with winds of more than 100mph slamming the state and producing a series of deadly tornadoes.

It came ashore near Siesta Key, a small beachfront community south of Tampa, before weakening further to a Category 2 storm.

The Tampa Bay area had not taken a direct hit from a major hurricane in more than a century, but the storm was still bringing a potentially deadly storm surge to much of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Multiple tornadoes also formed, with deaths from the storm already reported in St Lucie county.
