The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, is scheduled to visit Sierra Leone from October 14 to 18, 2024.

During his visit, SRSG Simão will co-chair the regional annual Open Day on Gender, Women, Youth, Peace, and Security with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Timothy Kabba. This event is focused on implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which addresses women’s participation in peace and security efforts.

Additionally, SRSG Simão will participate in the joint high-level ECOWAS-UNOWAS-AU-Commonwealth Follow Up Mission of the International Moral Guarantors. This mission aims to monitor the implementation of the Agreement of National Unity signed between the Government and the All-People’s Congress Party in October 2023.

SRSG Simão’s visit will include meetings with President Julius Maada Bio, representatives of the parties to the agreement, the Mano River Union leadership, the UN Country Team, the diplomatic corps, and other key stakeholders.
