Henry River Mill Village: A Ghost Town Frozen in Time

Located about an hour west of Charlotte in Hildebran, North Carolina, Henry River Mill Village is a step back into the past. Once a bustling mill town in the early 1900s, this now-abandoned village is a hauntingly beautiful destination. Walking through the deserted buildings, you can almost imagine the daily life of the workers who called this place home. The town, built to house employees of the Henry River Manufacturing Company, fell silent after the mill closed in 1977. Today, it stands as a well-preserved ghost town, attracting visitors intrigued by its history and eerie charm.

But there’s another reason Henry River Mill Village has gained fame in recent years—it was a key filming location for The Hunger Games. Fans of the franchise will recognize the village as District 12, where Katniss Everdeen's story begins. You can even visit Katniss’ house (well, the one used in the movie), making this trip a must for any fan of the series.

Exploring the quiet streets and crumbling structures is a unique experience, blending historical significance with Hollywood appeal. Whether you’re snapping pictures of the abandoned mill or reliving scenes from The Hunger Games, Henry River Mill Village offers a memorable journey into both history and pop culture.

Travel Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as the village's terrain can be uneven. Bring a camera—this ghost town is incredibly photogenic!

But don't worry if rock climbing isn’t your thing—Rock Face Mountain also offers a variety of hiking trails, some of which will still get your heart racing. The trail we took started off easy enough but quickly turned into a steep, 20-30-degree incline on a smooth rock surface. Sounds intense, right? It is!

Made it!! Notice the beads of sweat! The view was worth the climb! The reward is worth the effort: once you reach the top, you’re treated to jaw-dropping views of the surrounding countryside, stretching as far as the eye can see.

The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. You have to bear in mind that the trail is not part of any park but a private drive that the residents had allowed as an easement for the maintenance of the towers that the people had since used as a hiking trail to the top. Also, it is important to be aware of the elevation gain, as the trail climbs over 800 feet from the trailhead to the summit.
