Ukraine decries use of Russian “mercenaries” in Africa --[Reported by Umva mag]

This viewpoint comes as diplomatic relations between Ukraine and some Sahelian countries, such as Mali, Niger and Burkina, have deteriorated.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed, on Wednesday, October 9, its serious concerns about what it calls “illegal activities of Russia” in several African countries. According to Kyiv, Moscow uses an “African Corps” composed of mercenaries from private military companies such as the Wagner group, which Ukraine describes as terrorists.

kyiv emphasizes that the presence of these “mercenaries” leads to internal conflicts and generalized instability in the African countries concerned. These groups are allegedly involved in the plundering of precious natural resources, the profits of which are used to finance Russian aggression against Ukraine.

This statement comes as diplomatic relations between Kyiv and some African capitals, notably Bamako, have deteriorated. Mali accused Ukraine of supporting international terrorism, following the fighting on July 27, 2024 between the Malian Armed Forces, Wagner’s Russian auxiliaries, the CSP rebels and the JNIM.

Bamako subsequently broke off diplomatic relations with Kyiv. Niamey did the same. The member countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (ESA) have seized the United Nations Security Council to take responsibility for Ukraine’s attitude.

Exploitation of foreign nationals

In its statement, Kiev also denounced the forced recruitment of nationals from Africa and the Middle East by Russia to fight in Ukraine.

Ukraine calls on these people to refuse to join the ranks of the Russian army and presents the “I want to live” program, which allows them to surrender voluntarily.

The Ukrainian government calls on friendly countries in Africa and the Middle East to condemn Russian practices and take measures to put an end to them. Kyiv stresses that these actions violate international norms and the principles of the UN Charter.
